Observation- Engaging Middle School Students
1.
Role
of Teacher and Students
Initially,
the teacher is the director of all students behavior. Teacher give direction
for all students, the role that students have to follow during studying. What
should they do and cannot do while studying. Teacher tell students they will
get bonus point if they follow the role, but they will lost the bonus point if
they break the role that have been given by teacher.
Teacher tell students the way they do
their tasks that students have to do by themselves, then they have to standing
up, each one of them sharing, scoring on the scale 1 to 5, and tell why they
use that score, and they sitting down. If students break the roles, they will get 10 minus point in their scorces
for participant point. While the
students sharing, the teacher monitor them by around the classroom.
Teacher try to treat students interest
in the classroom. Where the teacher give score board for them, that is EC
(exter credit) as yepper if they get bonus point by said “oh yeah” with
spirit expression, and DC (dexter credit) as bommer if they get minus
points. And also, the students who totally participating and enthusiastic
following directions in learning, if they get one EC that is mean only one
homework problem and they will get yepper .
And teacher also tells students that
there is bonus points for the whole class if they do silent danceand said
“thankyou” to the teacher, but if they break the role they will get bommer and
more homework. While they talking in the classroom, they should ask permission
first and rise their hand or they will also get DC. So the teacher try to attract the attention,
readiness of the students.
Then teacher give other instruction that
is students have to prepare one blank piece of paper, paper, pencil and the
name on the top of paper then stand up. After that, teacher choose 3 students
to grab map (folder) and crayon for their friends in 2 minutes , afterwards pas
the map for others in quetly. But if they
can done in 1 minutes, they will get EC , in 2 minute they get nothing,
and more than 2 minutes they get DC.
Then they need to answer questions that
already provided in powerpoint by only use their brain without books, and write
it down on the map. The students who already done can standing up in silent and
waiting their friend quietly.
After all students finish the tasks,
teacher ask them work in pair that is matching their answer but still standing
up , and may sitting down after their answer is matching each of them. So they
solve the problem by them selves, but teacher also give them direction how they
gonna work, that is with reaching consensus.
And teacher ask students debate/do conversation in front of the class
and try to change the other mind while the conversation, the other friends
listen to them with pretend that there is no clue what their friends talk about
or called as focus face. Then teacher ask them discuss with their pair wheather
they agree or their friends changes their mind.
And next direction the students who not
already matching their answer with their neighbour still standing up, and who
alreading match listening the conversation the other friends who still standing
up without any input.
2.
The
Nature of Students-Teacher Interaction
The
nature of students-teacher interaction is the directions gives all the time and
also direction for each lesson is different. Sometimes students only answer the
question by themselves and read it, or they answer the questions and scoring
their friends work, after answer it they have to read it, then they do debate
and conversation in pair to know others critical thingking , so another
students listening for matching their answer. And also sometime they have to be
good listener without any input.
As
Rardin (1988) has observed, the Community Language Learning method is neither
students-centered, nor teacher-centered, but rather teacher-student centered,
with both being decision-makers in the class. Students can learn from their
interaction with each other as well as their interaction with their teacher. A
spirit of cooperation, not competition, can prevall.
The
teacher interact students individually and in pair. Initially the interaction
is characterized by the teacher and the students responding sometimes verbally
and also non verbal.
Students
follow the directions that given by teacher, and get bonus point that they
called EC (yepper) , if they avoid the direction they get minus point or DC (bommer). Teacher ask
students do the task and solves it by themselves but he gives clue how to do
that. However, at last the teacher will tell them the correct answer for make
it clear. And also during the learning process students must to done it quetly,
then standing up after finish the task, and may sitting down after discuss the
task together.

The
Characteristic of the Teaching Learning Process
In
this video teacher is as instructor, so the teacher give instruction for all
students in a beginning, middle and also in the end of the class. To attract
students attention for the lesson, he make the role during studying , also give
bonus points that they call yepper ( exter credit) if they do silent dance
after getting the yepper for the class ,
they also get bonus point for the whole class, but if they break the role that
have been provided, they will get bommer (dexter credit). Afterwards , they may talk with ask permission first or
they get bommer. So the purpose of this roles are to interact students
interest, readiness, paying attention to
their friends and teacher, also to treat their enthusiastic participating.
After
that, at the beginning of the learning process the teacher issues command for
all students to answering question for warm up, standing up quetly, then
discuss with their neighbour (in pair) until their answer questions is similar
then scoring 1 to 5 with give reason “why they give that score?” and sitting
down. Afterwards, the teacher choose 3 students
randomly then standing up in quietly to read their answer for all students ,
and also all students will scoring them (
3 students who choosen). The teacher give students opportunity to assess
their friends to take increasing responsibility for it and to make them learn
from one another.
In
the middle of the learning process, the teacher helps to arrow the scope of
attention with another intruction. For firstly , teacher ask student to prepare
one blank piece of paper , pencil and the name on the top of paper then
standing up. After that, teacher choose 3 students for grab the map (folder)and
crayon , then pass them for another in 2 minutes. if they do that in 1 minute they
get yepper.
Later,
teacher ask students to answer questions that are already provided in
powerpoint, but they only use their brain with no books while answering the
question, and also they must to hide their paper as privacy from other friends
to avoid cheatting. After answering the questions, they standing up and waiting
quietly until they agree each other ( with their pair). So after everybody done
answering the questions teacher ask students to solve the problems by them self
and they work together with their friends, but teacher give direction that they
gonna work by using reaching consensus. At first the teacher tell students what
reaching consensus is and how how to use it. Then both of them (pair) have to
matching their answer , so that they can sitting down and teacher choose a pair of students
standing up in front of the class for debate or do conversation each other, and
try to change others mind.
During
the studying, to attract students attention and interest of students, teacher
use TPR that is when the teacher said crayon, everybody yell out “crayon” and
their pencil with pen on the floor,
beacuse when the teacher said “crayon”, students only used crayon for writing.
If they are not follow the direction, they will get bommer.
4.
How
Does the Teacher Respond to the Students
Errors ?
For
the students errors teacher always take off their bonus point and also try guide them to the correct one by repeat the
directions clearly. As students get more advanced, teachers may correct more of
their errors. And also the teacher ask the students correct their friends
errorrs together with him. So he want to see the critical thingking of their
students, and they also aware of their own progress.
