When she started teaching while at the time the internet gets going as an educational tool she take off from Wisconsin and move rural Kansas school district, where she was teaching her favorite subject, American government. At
first year, students not exactly all that enthusiastic. Year two: she
change tactic, she allowed them to learn for themselves. And they step up. They make it. Her tactic
success change their weaknesses.
From Kansas she moved on to lovely Arizona, taught for a number
of years, with middle school students. Taught exciting topic of
geography. There, she found extraordinarily eclectic group of kids to work
with in a truly public school. They get opportunity to meet paul “artist”
and they should meet him at the high school next door to them, but they should
walk to get there. Because no buses.
Learn from paul, she ask
her students to produce a little movie by computer with their own word and
they were into it. Also they should put their own voice over it, they speak to
them self .Again, she success make it. Her students done it well. Even awesome.
Next, she moved to
Pennsylvania, taught science academy which is a partnership school between the
Franklin Institute and the school district of Philadelphia. nine through
12 public school.
Out there, they have a one-to-one laptop program, so the kids are bringing in laptops with them everyday, taking them home, getting access to information. when
there is a tool, let’s students be freedom, however they do wrong thing. She
believe that always have
the right answer doesn't allow them to learn. They did project, produced info-graphics, decided to do at the end of the year responding. But they had certain criteria to do it. They were a little uncomfortable with it, because we'd never done this before, and they
didn't know exactly how to do it. although, diana gave them the room to just do the thing. Go create.
There are a million
pictures that I could click through here, and had to choose carefully of students learning, we let go of the idea that kids have to come to school to get the
information, but instead ask them what they can do with it. Ask them really interesting questions. They will not disappoint. Ask them to go to places, to see things for themselves s,to actually experience the learning, to play, to inquire.
The main point is that, if we continue to look at education as if it's about coming to school to get the information and not about experiential learning. We know how to do this better, and it's time to do better.
